Spelling & Geography Bees

Spelling Bee Club

Meetings begin each year in early September. Check back in August for the specific date.

Who: students in grades 4 to 8 (Younger students are welcome at the practices but may not compete in the official bee. They will have their own “unofficial” bee one week prior to the official bee. Fourth graders may participate in either bee at their parents’ discretion.)

When: weekly on Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 pm

Where: at The River church, 1275 US Hwy 2 W, Kalispell

How much: for eligible students (grades four through eight), the annual fee is $10 per student for FHEA members and $15 for non-FHEA members. For younger students (kindergarten through grade three) the fee is $5 per student for FHEA members and $7.50 for non-FHEA members. (Note that out of the club membership fees, FHEA pays the annual registration fee that permits us to participate in Scripps-sponsored spelling bees higher than the county level.)

Word Lists: We are not allowed to post the spelling lists on the internet, so families need to contact Elizabeth Rye to receive copies of the lists. Lists are also available at the practices.

The final homeschool spelling bee will be conducted using the School Spelling Bee Guide for grades one through eight, provided by Scripps. Students who hope to progress in the competition should master all the classroom words as well as the Spell it! words (My Spell It!). The winner of the homeschool bee (or the alternate) will represent the homeschool community at the Flathead County Spelling Bee in mid-February. The top three spellers at the county bee will progress to the Treasure State Spelling Bee, held at Rocky Mountain College in Billings in mid-March.

Another great resource for learning spelling words is Spelling City.

Geography Bee Club

Meetings begin each year in early September. Check back in August for the specific date.

Who: students in grades 4 to 8 (Younger students are welcome at the practices but will only be allowed to participate in the preliminary rounds of the official bee. They are ineligible to represent FHEA at the state bee.)

When: weekly on Thursdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm

Where: at The River church, 1275 US Hwy 2 W, Kalispell

How much: for eligible students (grades four through eight), the annual fee is $10 per student for FHEA members and $15 for non-FHEA members. For younger students (kindergarten through grade three) the fee is $5 per student for FHEA members and $7.50 for non-FHEA members. (Note that out of the club membership fees, FHEA pays the annual registration fee that permits us to participate in National Geographic GeoBees at all levels.)

We must have at least six participants in grades 4-8 at the final bee in order for the winner to move on in the competition. The winner of the final bee will take an online test (in January) that will determine whether or not he or she may compete at the state level in the spring.
