The Flathead Valley Homeschool Senior Spotlights blog (flatheadseniorspotlights.home.blog) is a renewed offering born of an old tradition: the much-loved and ever-missed “Homeschool Herald” newsletter. The blog is managed primarily by Melina Baracker, a homeschool senior, with help from her mom, Nancy Baracker. It is their desire to continue the practice of commending homeschool seniors and encouraging the greater homeschool community—especially younger students—by placing a spotlight on each senior’s life, homeschooling experiences, hobbies, goals, etc.

Seniors who would like to send in a senior spotlight may contact the Barackers at fvhsseniorspotlights@gmail.com. When seniors send in a spotlight, Mrs. Baracker will work with them to polish their written piece, and Melina will format and post the finalized pictures and text to the blog.

Please note these important details:

  1. Senior spotlights must be written by the senior or by a willing friend or family member; Melina and Mrs. Baracker will not be writing the spotlights.
  2. Spotlights should be 500-700 words long and contain appropriate content.
  3. Seniors must be prepared to work with Mrs. Baracker during the proofreading process. The goal is to ensure that each senior spotlight is a polished, enjoyable read that reflects each senior’s unique personality.
  4. Seniors may include up to three tasteful and high quality (i.e. high resolution) photos. Ideally, one of those photos should be a senior picture. Other photo options might portray vacations, field trips, memorable experiences, accomplishments, or even completed artwork.
  5. Remember that this blog is online and is therefore viewable by the general public. Students must understand the effect this may have in terms of online privacy and carefully consider the choice of whether or not to enter a senior spotlight.
  6. And finally, below is a list of questions for seniors to consider as they write their spotlight. While not every question has to be answered, reading through the list will make the writing process easier and help get those creative juices flowing!
